During the pre-dam era the Kosi river shifted West because there was a net uplift from monsoon to dry-season sloping westward in the longitude band 80-100. During the dam era there is a net massive subsidence sloping due East in the same longitude band. This massive alternation of uplift in monsoon and subsidence in the dry season puts enormous beyond design basis pressure on the barrages, dams and embankments. This forced the river Kosi to shift 120 kms to the East this year.
